영어 분석 (스티브잡스 스텐포드대학 연설문 #2)

영어분석 #1에 이어 두 번째 영어분석을 시작해 본다. 이 포스팅은 예전에 공부했었던 것을 리뷰하는 마음으로 작성하였다.

It started before I was born,
접속사               태어났다(수동)

My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decide to put me up for adoption.
      생물할적인

결혼하지 않은 cf) graduate [eit] 졸업하다, 그레쥬[엇] 으로 발음하면(대학원의, n. 졸업생) 나를 ~하기 위해 놓다, 두다(맡기다)

adopt(채택하다), adoption(입양)
decide to ~ to이하 하기로 결정하다.
decide that S+ V ~ S가 V 하기로 결정하다.

She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me

                                                                                                                                   당연 수동태
조동사는 뒤에 오는 본동사의 뉘앙스를 담당한다.

cf) should의 용법(의무, 추측, 당연)

1. 해야 한다. must > have to > should

2. 당연하다.

S + felt strongly~ that S + should의 표현

(‘주어가 동사하는 것이 당연하다고 강하게 느꼈다’의 뉘앙스)

To be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.

내가 입양 되도록 태어난 시기에

cf) to부정사의 의미상 주어

for+ 목적격 + to + V 목적격이(가) to이하 V 하도록으로 해석

(,) 생략 =막판에, 마지막순간에
Expect that when I popped out /they decided at the last minte that they really wanted a girl.

                              튀어나오다(과거형이 모음+자음으로 끝날 때 발음을 쉽게 하려고 자음을 겹쳐 쓰고 –ed)

that 이하를 제외하고

cf) could you put me on a waiting list?

I will put you on a waiting list.

그래서 있었던 대기자명단에 전화받다

So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middlle of the night asking

                      (,) 콤마가 나오면 뒤에 (,)콤마가 있는지 확인하여 있으면 삽입절임 ~의 중간에(한가운데)

cf) get a call ~ Ving ~하는 전화를 받다(V 하고 있는 중인 뉘앙스)

cf) in the middle of the night 한밤중에

“we have an unexpected baby boy. do you want him?”

they said "of course".

                                          (몰랐던, 가려졌던 사실 등을) 알아내다 cf) find (물건 등을) 발견하다

my biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from colleage and that my father had never graduated from high school.


cf) find out that ~ that 이하라는 사실을 알아내다

She refused to sign the final adoption papers
                                                    종이, 신문, 서류
                    단지 약간의(몇 달 후에)
She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would

= changed, agreed, relent 누그러지다. relented 누그러진(동의도하면서 누그러졌다는 뉘앙스)

someday go to college.

promise to~ to 이하라고 약속하다

언젠가 promise that~ (that s v) 이하라고 약속하다

some+day, someday 둘다 사용해도됨.
